Sic Semper Tyrannis is the motto on Virginia’s Great Seal, adopted in 1776. The figure is Virtus, representing civic virtue and courage, standing over the fallen figure of Tyranny. Her spear is lowered and her parazonium is sheathed, showing that the struggle is over. Beneath Tyranny lie a fallen crown, broken chain, and scourge, symbols of defeated oppression.
