Mass formation psychosis is a phenomenon in which a large group of people, often influenced by fear and anxiety, becomes unable to think critically and instead embraces a shared delusion or belief system. The term was coined by Belgian psychology professor Mattias Desmet, who used it to describe the psychological processes that led to the rise of totalitarian regimes in the 20th century.

Mass formation psychosis can occur when four conditions are met:

  • A sense of social isolation and lack of meaning or purpose in life

  • A perceived threat or crisis that creates fear and anxiety
The emergence of a leader or group that provides a sense of belonging and purpose
  • A collective belief in a shared narrative or ideology that offers an explanation for the crisis and a solution to it.
