The original. Jim McVay tied the first Gotcha in the Bahamas in the 1980s after breaking off a bonefish on a fly cut from an airline seatbelt, and the pattern has anchored every serious bonefish fly box in the world ever since.
This is the Light version — silver bead-chain eyes for a soft entry and slow sink. When bones are tailing in skinny water and you need the fly to land like a piece of the flat instead of a rock, bead chain is the answer. It also rides hook-point up, so you can strip through turtle grass and marl without collecting weeds.
Every fly is built on a Gamakatsu SL11-3H — 3X-strong tin-plated saltwater hook, sharp out of the package, and stays sharp through a full trip. Pink thread hot spot at the head, pearl mylar body, craft fur wing, and holographic flash tail.
Two proven colors:
- Tan — the universal Gotcha color. Matches spawning shrimp, marl bottoms, and tan sand. Start here on any flat, anywhere.
- Pearl — for bright sun, white sand, and clear water. When the light is high and the fish are spooky, white gets eaten when tan gets refused.
What eats it: Bonefish primarily. Small permit will inhale a Gotcha in the right size. Baby tarpon in mangrove creeks. Redfish and specks on the marsh will crush the tan version. Sheepshead when a shrimp is what they want.
How to fish it: Lead the fish six to eight feet. Let the fly settle to the bottom before the first strip. Short, sharp strips with pauses — the fly darts and drops. Most eats come on the drop. When the fish flares or turns, strip-set hard.
Pair with the Gotcha Heavy when you need to punch through wind or fish deeper flats — same pattern, lead eyes for faster sink. Every Bahamas box needs both.
