Bright, Floral, Alive

A washed community lot from the Genji Challa kebele near Agaro, deep in the Jimma highlands of western Ethiopia. Landrace varieties grown above 2,100 meters that cup cherry-bright, jasmine-floral, and unmistakably Ethiopian.

Smallholder farmers here work plots of one hectare or less, intercropping coffee with banana and native shade trees and hauling cherry to collection centers by motorcycle, horse, or donkey. At the washing station, cherries are mechanically depulped, soaked overnight, and dried slow over 6 to 8 days on raised beds. This is a region where coffee keeps the forest standing. The crop needs a healthy ecosystem, so the ecosystem stays.
