The California State flag is inspired by the Historic Bear flag raised by American settlers at Sonoma in 1846 in revolt to Mexican rule. Designed by William Todd on unbleached cotton, it features a star imitating the lone star of Texas and a grizzly bear, which were common at the time in California. The words California Republic were placed under the design and was adopted in 1911 as the state flag.
